Teknowarta – Universitas Singaperbangsa Karawang (Unsika Karawang) is currently navigating a significant nomenclature shift, yet its engineering study programs, locally known as “Teknik,” have not yet adopted the new “Rekayasa” designation. This change aligns with the policy set forth by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek), but Unsika requires additional time to fully implement the revised naming convention.
The government’s preceding policy, while establishing “Teknik” and “Rekayasa” as equivalent terms for higher education study programs, granted individual universities the autonomy to manage the implementation. This flexibility allows institutions to align the transition with their specific administrative readiness and academic system adjustments.
Confirming the current status, Yayat Hendayana, Head of Unsika’s Bureau of Academic, Student Affairs, and Cooperation, stated that no changes to the program names have been made thus far.
“We at Unsika still utilize the ‘Teknik’ designation for our study programs,” Hendayana affirmed in an interview with JawaPos.com on Friday, May 15.
Nevertheless, he indicated that Unsika intends to propose the conversion of “Teknik” program names to “Rekayasa” at a later stage.
“We will submit the program name change proposal, but it requires time to integrate the ‘Rekayasa’ nomenclature across all our data and official documents,” Yayat elaborated.
UI Not Changing Engineering Program Names to ‘Rekayasa,’ Rector Says Essence Is the Same
According to Hendayana, the process of transformation extends far beyond a simple name alteration. It encompasses a comprehensive overhaul involving the adjustment of various academic data, administrative systems, and official campus documents to ensure full compliance with the latest regulations.
Consequently, Unsika remains in a transitional phase as it prepares to officially adopt the “Rekayasa”-based program naming scheme, in accordance with the government’s directive.
Previously, Kemendiktisaintek indeed issued a policy that sanctioned the use of “Rekayasa” as an equivalent term for “Teknik” within numerous engineering programs across higher education institutions.
However, the actual execution of this policy was entrusted to each university, including state legal entity universities, with the stipulation that they report their progress to the Directorate General of Higher Education.
“State legal entity universities are permitted to utilize program study names equivalent to those outlined in this Director General’s Decision and must report to the Director General of Higher Education,” the regulation stipulates.
Within the most recent compiled list, several study programs previously identified with the term “Teknik” have now transitioned to “Rekayasa.” For instance, Teknik Elektro has become Rekayasa Elektro (Electrical Engineering), Teknik Mesin is now Rekayasa Mesin (Mechanical Engineering), and Teknik Sipil has transformed into Rekayasa Sipil (Civil Engineering).
Summary
Universitas Singaperbangsa Karawang (Unsika) has not yet adopted the “Rekayasa” designation for its engineering programs, retaining the traditional “Teknik” nomenclature. This decision, confirmed by Yayat Hendayana, aligns with a Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek) policy that grants universities autonomy in implementing the name change. Unsika plans to propose the conversion at a later stage, requiring time to integrate the new naming convention across all data and official documents.
The postponement is due to the extensive process required to adjust various academic data, administrative systems, and official campus documents. This transformation is not a simple name alteration but a comprehensive overhaul to ensure full compliance. Kemendiktisaintek’s policy sanctions “Rekayasa” as an equivalent term for “Teknik” and requires universities to report their implementation progress to the Directorate General of Higher Education.
