In a dramatic escalation of rhetoric, then-US President Donald Trump issued a stern ultimatum to Iran, demanding the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump threatened to unleash “hell” upon the Islamic Republic if his demand was not met within 48 hours, intensifying an already fraught diplomatic standoff.
The US President conveyed his warning via Truth Social, as reported by AFP on Saturday, April 4. “Remember when I gave Iran ten days to make a deal or open the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote, reflecting on a prior communication regarding the crucial maritime passage.
He further pressed the issue, declaring, “Time is running out — 48 hours before hell will be unleashed upon them. All glory to God!” This statement underscored the gravity of his threat and infused it with religious undertones, characteristic of some of his public addresses.
This latest threat followed a similar warning issued on March 21, when Trump initially threatened to devastate Iran’s power plants. At that time, he stated that such an attack would be launched if the Strait of Hormuz remained closed beyond a 48-hour period.
However, just two days later, a temporary reprieve emerged. Trump announced that communications were underway with Iranian representatives, leading to a 5-day postponement of the threatened strike on Iran’s power facilities. This brief diplomatic window offered a moment of de-escalation amidst the rising tensions.
Consequently, the deadline for Iran was pushed back, eventually extending to Tuesday, April 7, at 00:00 GMT, giving both sides a little more time to navigate the precarious situation surrounding the vital waterway.
In response to Trump’s ultimatum, Iran’s Central Military Command firmly refused to engage. General Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi, speaking from the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, dismissed Trump’s threats as “a helpless, nervous, imbalanced, and foolish act,” highlighting Tehran’s defiance.
General Aliabadi also specifically critiqued Trump’s use of religious language in his threats, turning the rhetoric back on the former US President. He issued a stark counter-warning, implying severe repercussions for any hostile actions against Iran.
Concluding his statement, the Iranian General issued his own chilling prognostication: “The simple meaning of this message is that the gates of hell will open for you,” directly referencing Trump’s earlier “hell” threat and ensuring the verbal sparring ended on an equally ominous note.
