Rasuna Said Car Free Day Suspended Until June 2026

The Jakarta Provincial Government has officially decided to temporarily suspend the Car Free Day (CFD) program on Jalan HR Rasuna Said, South Jakarta, this Sunday, May 17. The program is scheduled to resume in June 2026, following a period dedicated to addressing critical field evaluations and infrastructure improvements.

Syafrin Liputo, Head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub), stated that early assessments confirm the Rasuna Said CFD corridor has provided significant benefits to the public, both as a vital open space and as a tool for improving local environmental quality. “The Car Free Day (HBKB) on Jalan HR Rasuna Said serves as an excellent alternative for exercise and public interaction. Furthermore, air quality measurements taken during the event show a marked improvement compared to standard workdays,” Syafrin noted on Saturday (May 16).

Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative has successfully distributed crowd density away from the traditional Sudirman–Thamrin route. According to Dishub data, the number of visitors at the Sudirman–MH Thamrin CFD dropped from 29,256 on May 3, 2026, to 13,759 on May 10, 2026—a reduction of approximately 52.97 percent. “This data demonstrates that the Rasuna Said corridor is effectively alleviating congestion in the main city center, allowing for a more dispersed and comfortable experience for all residents,” Syafrin added.

Despite this success, the May 10 trial highlighted several areas requiring immediate attention. Key evaluation points include the current lack of turning points on the east and west sides of the corridor, the absence of protective barriers for Transjakarta lanes, and the persistence of illegal parking in various zones. Furthermore, the management of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) needs refinement, as merchant activities have been encroaching onto the main roadway. Ongoing road construction projects on alternative routes have also been identified as a significant factor in localized traffic congestion.

The agency also noted technical challenges, such as uneven road surfaces remaining from the previous monorail pillar demolition and bottlenecks near the Plaza Festival area, which have forced runners and cyclists to occasionally occupy Transjakarta lanes. Syafrin emphasized that these issues will be managed by a multi-agency task force dedicated to the CFD program. The provincial government is also currently formalizing the legal framework to govern future activities along Jalan HR Rasuna Said.

“We are committed to improving supporting facilities and refining crowd management protocols to ensure that future HBKB events in Rasuna Said are safer, more convenient, and better organized,” concluded Syafrin. Once these improvements are implemented, the Car Free Day on Jalan HR Rasuna Said will resume every Sunday from 05:30 to 09:00, starting in June 2026.

Summary

The Jakarta Provincial Government has officially suspended the Car Free Day (CFD) program on Jalan HR Rasuna Said from May 17, 2026, through June 2026. This suspension is intended to allow for a comprehensive field evaluation and infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing public comfort and safety. The program was previously considered effective in reducing traffic congestion along the Sudirman-Thamrin corridor and improving local air quality.

Several technical issues prompted this decision, including a lack of U-turn facilities, the absence of Transjakarta lane dividers, and suboptimal management of illegal parking and street vendors. The government will establish a special task force to address these challenges, which includes road surface repairs and crowd management improvements. Once these upgrades are complete, the CFD program on Rasuna Said is scheduled to resume every Sunday from 05:30 to 09:00 WIB.
