Authorities in Central Jakarta have launched a decisive crackdown on illicit activities, apprehending eight illegal parking attendants operating in the bustling Tanah Abang area. These individuals are currently under investigation for allegedly charging exorbitant parking fees, sparking widespread public concern.
The operation, led by AKBP Dhimas Prasetyo, Chief of the Metro Tanah Abang Police, was prompted by a surge of reports and viral content circulating on social media detailing the rampant unauthorized parking practices in the commercial hub.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday (February 17), Chief Prasetyo emphasized the police’s swift response. “The police have taken proactive measures in light of the viral reports to prevent further escalation and to foster a more conducive and secure environment,” he stated. “We have brought in the parking attendants suspected of extortion for intensive questioning.”
The scale of the alleged exploitation is alarming, with Chief Prasetyo revealing that the suspects were reportedly demanding anywhere from Rp 60,000 to an astounding Rp 100,000 for each parked vehicle. This figure stands in stark contrast to official parking tariffs, highlighting the severity of the illegal parking syndicate’s operations.
While the identities of the arrested individuals have not yet been released, the authorities confirm that they are currently undergoing intensive interrogation. Chief Prasetyo elaborated on the ongoing legal process, explaining, “We are thoroughly investigating whether their actions warrant formal charges and further law enforcement prosecution, or if they are suitable for guidance and stricter administrative measures.” This underscores the careful approach being taken to ensure justice.
Footage of the dramatic arrests had earlier circulated widely across social media platforms, contributing to the public outcry. The viral video depicted plainclothes police officers swiftly apprehending one of the illegal parking attendants, while others attempted to flee the scene. Despite their efforts to escape capture, police ultimately managed to apprehend all individuals involved, bringing an end to their illicit activities in the area.
