The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has officially named five individuals as suspects following a recent sting operation conducted in the Rejang Lebong area of Bengkulu. Among those implicated is M. Fikri Thobari, the Regent of Rejang Lebong, marking a significant development in the nation’s ongoing fight against corruption.
KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo confirmed that the five suspects comprise three alleged bribe-givers and two alleged bribe-recipients. The decision to elevate their legal status was made after an internal leadership review. “Earlier this evening, a leadership exposition was held, where the legal status of those apprehended was determined. The KPK has named five individuals as suspects in this covert investigation,” Budi announced at the KPK’s Merah Putih Building in South Jakarta on Monday evening (10/3).

Elaborating on the preliminary case construction, Budi explained that the alleged bribery is intricately linked to various development projects within the Rejang Lebong Regency Government. He specifically highlighted the involvement of the Regent. “Yes, he is one of them. The alleged receipt of funds by the Rejang Lebong Regent comes from private parties,” Budi stated.
The investigation is currently focused on allegations that the Regent received substantial sums of money from several private companies acting as project implementers. This appears to be part of a “project ijon” scheme, where upfront payments or illicit advances are made to secure project contracts. Budi further clarified, “Currently, we are deepening our understanding of the alleged receipt of money by the Regent from several private parties who are project contractors, within the framework of a project ‘ijon’ bribery scheme.”
A total of nine individuals, who were initially detained during the anti-corruption operation, are presently undergoing intensive questioning at the KPK’s Merah Putih Building. The Commission is committed to thoroughly investigating the procurement practices for goods and services within the Rejang Lebong Regency Government. This extensive probe aims to uncover any potential money flows to other parties beyond those already identified.
Further details regarding the identities of all suspects and the comprehensive construction of the case will be officially disclosed by the KPK in an upcoming press conference, as the investigation continues to unfold.
