The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has disclosed that the recovery process for Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of KontraS, is anticipated to be lengthy, potentially spanning up to two years following a severe acid attack incident some time ago.
Saurlin P. Siagian, Komnas HAM Commissioner for Monitoring and Investigation, stated that an in-depth assessment revealed Andrie’s injuries fall under the category of chemical burns caused by a strong acid substance.
“We just obtained information from RSCM, where we had the opportunity to speak with the treating specialist doctors and the hospital management. Firstly, the burns were caused by being doused with a strong acid chemical. So, perhaps this is the official term we can collectively use for the public,” Saurlin explained at RSCM Kiara Building in Jakarta on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
He further added that the victim’s recovery would be a long-term process, necessitating a series of advanced medical procedures.
“Subsequently, the primary focus of recovery will be over the next six months. Surgeries will continue, and they are expected to last between six months and two years for 100% recovery from the burns,” Saurlin continued, emphasizing the extensive rehabilitation required.

Additionally, Saurlin confirmed that the medical expenses for Andrie’s treatment have been fully covered.
“We received confirmation that, thankfully, the costs are being covered by the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK),” he stated, providing crucial relief regarding the financial burden of the extensive treatment.
Meanwhile, Komnas HAM Commissioner for Mediation, Pramono Ubaid, noted that the victim’s condition, particularly his eyes, remains under close observation, making it premature to conclude on his progress.
“The hospital is still analyzing the development of Mr. AY’s eye condition. They cannot yet conclude whether it is deteriorating or improving; it is still in process, within a timeframe where the possibilities are equally significant. Thus, they cannot draw a definitive conclusion yet,” Pramono elaborated, highlighting the delicate and uncertain nature of the ocular injury.

Previously, RSCM announced that Andrie underwent his second eye surgery on Wednesday, March 25, at approximately 10:00 AM WIB.
“During this procedure, the eye team performed tissue transfer from an inner eye area to close an open region, attached an amnion membrane, and re-inserted a protective eye lens,” explained Yoga Nara, RSCM’s Legal and Public Relations Manager, detailing the intricate surgical interventions.
These critical procedures were undertaken after medical teams identified serious complications in the right eye, including ischemia, a condition characterized by insufficient blood flow leading to tissue thinning. Beyond the eye surgery, the multidisciplinary medical team also carried out further treatments, such as debridement of dead tissue and skin grafts on various parts of the body, addressing the broader impact of the acid attack.
RSCM affirmed that Andrie’s current condition is under rigorous monitoring by a multidisciplinary medical team, ensuring that his complex recovery process progresses optimally.
