Teknowarta – Following a disappointing 1-2 defeat to rivals Madura United in Week 28 of the BRI Super League 2025/2026, Persebaya Surabaya captain Francisco Rivera offered a candid insight into the team’s locker room atmosphere. The crucial match unfolded at the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya on Friday evening.
“Believe me,” Rivera stated during the post-match press conference at GBT Stadium, “in the locker room, everyone was deeply disappointed – both players and staff. We are saddened by today’s loss.”
Despite the unfavorable result, Rivera reflected on their performance, asserting that Persebaya had largely controlled the flow of the game and successfully executed the tactical plans devised by their coach. However, the captain candidly admitted that the primary factor contributing to their defeat was their inability to convert numerous scoring opportunities into goals.
“We created many chances,” he emphasized, “but we just couldn’t score.”
Concurrently, Persebaya coach Bernado Tavares extended his sincere apologies to the loyal Bonek and Bonita supporters for the team’s failure to secure a victory. He acknowledged the players’ diligent efforts on the field, even though the outcome was not what anyone had hoped for. Tavares expressed his understanding of the fans’ disappointment, particularly as the match was played on home turf, with the team enjoying robust support from the stands.
“I am also disappointed,” Tavares stated, “and I apologize because we never like to lose.”
The Portuguese coach also drew attention to the less-than-ideal squad situation, which has been significantly impacted by several key players suffering injuries. This situation, he noted, inevitably limited his strategic options on the pitch. According to Tavares, certain players were unavailable for selection as they are currently undergoing rehabilitation with the medical team.
“Players who are not present are either injured or sick,” he explained, “and we have to rely on all available players.”
Looking ahead, Tavares acknowledged that Persebaya faces a challenging schedule, with two difficult away fixtures against Malut United and Arema FC on the horizon. The coach affirmed that the team’s immediate focus would be on player recovery processes and maximizing preparation time to adequately tackle these demanding matches.
“We need to assess which players are available,” he concluded, “and then endeavor to formulate the best possible plan.”
