Southeast Asia’s football landscape is set for a significant expansion with the official introduction of the FIFA ASEAN Cup. First unveiled by FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia in October 2025, the highly anticipated tournament recently had its inaugural dates formally confirmed on Friday, March 20.
In an official statement, FIFA announced, “The FIFA Council approved the introduction of the FIFA ASEAN Cup, first presented at the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia in October 2025 and positively received, with the first edition planned for September-October 2026.” This formal approval marks a new chapter for Southeast Asian football, bringing a premier regional competition under the global football governing body’s umbrella.
Crucially, the FIFA ASEAN Cup is not slated to replace the existing AFF Cup, also known as the ASEAN Championship. This means that the dynamic Southeast Asian region will soon host two major football tournaments, offering more competitive opportunities and elevating the sport’s profile across the participating nations.

The established AFF Cup (ASEAN Championship) will precede the new FIFA tournament, scheduled to run from July 24 to August 26, 2026. However, the FIFA ASEAN Cup presents a unique advantage for national teams like the Indonesia National Team: the strong possibility of fielding their absolute best players, a luxury not always afforded in regional competitions.
This critical advantage stems from the proposed scheduling of the FIFA ASEAN Cup from September 21 to October 6, 2026. These dates align perfectly with the official FIFA Matchday window, a period when clubs are obligated to release players for international duty. This strategic placement ensures that participating nations, including Indonesia, can potentially call upon their top talent, as each country is allotted four matches during this crucial international break.
The inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup is expected to feature 11 Southeast Asian countries, including powerhouse Indonesia. For the Indonesia National Team, this tournament represents a golden opportunity to assert its dominance and potentially reign supreme in the region, showcasing its full strength on a prestigious new platform.
