Tulungagung Regent Gatut Sunu Wibowo issued a public apology to the people of Tulungagung after the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) officially named him a suspect in an alleged extortion case. The announcement marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to combat corruption within regional administrations.
Following intense questioning and his designation as a suspect, Gatut Sunu was observed being escorted by officers towards a detention vehicle at the KPK’s Red and White Building in the early hours of Sunday, April 12, at precisely 00:17 AM Western Indonesian Time (WIB). He, along with his aide, was seen wearing the distinctive orange vest, a common sight for KPK detainees.
As he made his way to the vehicle, Gatut Sunu briefly addressed reporters who inquired about any message he wished to convey to the Tulungagung community. His terse response was simply, “My apologies,” before he remained silent, entering the detention car. He was accompanied by his aide, Dwi Yoga Ambal, who has also been implicated and named a suspect in the same extortion scheme.

The decision to name Gatut Sunu and Dwi Yoga as suspects stemmed from a targeted KPK sting operation (OTT). Investigators conducted a comprehensive examination after their initial apprehension, gathering sufficient preliminary evidence to substantiate the charges against both individuals.
Confirming the escalation of the case, Deputy for Enforcement and Execution at the KPK, Asep Guntur Rahayu, stated during a press conference at his office on Saturday, April 11, “The KPK subsequently elevated this case to the investigation stage and designated two suspects: GSW as the Tulungagung Regent for the 2025–2030 period, and DYA as the ADC or aide to the Regent.”

Both suspects were immediately placed under detention for an initial period of 20 days, effective from April 11 to April 30, 2026, at the KPK Red and White Building Branch Detention Center. This swift action underscores the seriousness with which the KPK is pursuing the alleged offenses.
The KPK’s investigation revealed that Gatut Sunu had allegedly extorted approximately IDR 5 billion from several Regional Apparatus Organizations (OPD) and officials within the Tulungagung Regency administration. Of this substantial sum, an estimated IDR 2.7 billion had reportedly already been received and pocketed by Gatut Sunu.
During the successful sting operation, KPK teams seized a variety of crucial evidence, including documents, electronic devices, and several luxury items. Among the confiscated goods were multiple pairs of Louis Vuitton shoes, alongside cash totaling IDR 335.4 million, which Asep confirmed to be a portion of the IDR 2.7 billion allegedly received by GSW.
For their alleged actions, Gatut Sunu and Dwi Yoga face charges under Article 12 letter e or Article 12B of the Corruption Crime Law in conjunction with Article 20 letter c of Law No. 1 Year 2023 concerning the Criminal Code. These articles carry severe penalties, reflecting the gravity of their purported involvement in corrupt practices.
