The Cirebon City Transportation Agency (Dishub) in West Java has reported a significant surge in returning Eid al-Fitr travelers heading towards Jakarta via the critical Northern Coastal Road (Pantura) until Saturday afternoon, March 28th. This heightened traffic volume underscores the ongoing momentum of the post-holiday migration.
Yeye Mulyana, Head of the Control and Operations Section at Cirebon City Dishub, confirmed that the vehicle volume traversing this vital route remains exceptionally high. “The traffic flow on the Pantura route is still predominantly composed of returnees heading to Jakarta and its surrounding areas,” Yeye stated during a briefing in Cirebon on Saturday, March 28th, highlighting the sustained exodus.
Motorcycles Dominate Pantura Return Flow
Despite a large number of travelers having already returned to their respective cities of work in the preceding days, Yeye anticipates that the potential for congestion will persist through the weekend. This expected continuation of heavy traffic coincides with the conclusion of the Eid al-Fitr holiday period for many workers, prompting a final rush home.
“The potential for congestion will likely continue until the end of this weekend, as the balik mudik (return migration) period is still underway,” Yeye reiterated, emphasizing the extended nature of the post-holiday travel rush.
According to Dishub’s statistical data compiled up to Saturday at 5:30 PM Western Indonesian Time (WIB), a substantial 58,418 vehicles were recorded moving along the Cirebon City Pantura route, all bound for Jakarta. Yeye elaborated that this figure translates into a consistent and considerable hourly density on the road.
“This volume is equivalent to approximately 2,434 vehicles per hour traversing the route,” he detailed, illustrating the steady and heavy flow of traffic.
Notably, two-wheeled vehicles continue to be the primary mode of transport during this return period, accounting for a dominant 48,147 units of the total volume observed. This significant number highlights the reliance on motorcycles for long-distance travel among a large segment of Eid travelers.
Nearly Half a Million Vehicles Transited Cirebon
This trend of heightened traffic density is a direct continuation from the previous day. On Friday, March 27th, the number of vehicles passing through the area was even higher, reaching 80,532 units, with two-wheeled vehicles once again dominating the count at an impressive 61,375 units. This consistent pattern underscores the intense flow of return traffic throughout the week.
When calculated cumulatively since the commencement of the Eid al-Fitr return migration period, the sheer volume of vehicles departing Cirebon and heading westward has reached a staggering figure. “Cumulatively, during the entire Eid al-Fitr balik mudik period, the total number of vehicles that have transited towards Jakarta via the Cirebon Pantura route has reached approximately 476,682 units,” Yeye announced, revealing the immense scale of the mass movement.
Despite this massive surge in vehicle volume, the Dishub authorities have assured the public that the situation on the ground remains safe and well-managed. Officers are continuously deployed and remain vigilant at key vulnerable points to effectively regulate traffic flow and mitigate potential issues.
“Nevertheless, Yeye confirms that the traffic conditions along the Cirebon City Pantura route are currently monitored and remain under control,” he clarified, providing reassurance to travelers. Yeye further emphasized that the main focus of the agency currently is proactive anticipation of any sudden spikes in vehicle volume.
“Field officers are continuously implementing traffic management measures to effectively anticipate and handle any unexpected increases in vehicle volume,” he concluded, underscoring the ongoing commitment to ensuring a smooth and safe return journey for all travelers.
