PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), commonly known as KAI, has reported that a significant number of railway level crossings within the Daop 1 Jakarta operational area remain unmanned. This lack of supervision poses ongoing challenges for safety management at the intersection of rail tracks and public roads.
According to data obtained by kumparan, there are a total of 423 level crossings across the Daop 1 Jakarta region as of April 2026. Of these, 293 crossings are currently guarded, while 130 points remain without active oversight. In an effort to improve safety and streamline traffic, authorities have also established 118 non-level crossings, consisting of flyovers and underpasses designed to completely separate train paths from vehicular traffic.
The Daop 1 Jakarta operational area serves a vast territory, including DKI Jakarta and Banten, as well as key locations in West Java such as Bogor, Depok, Citayam, Bojonggede, Cilebut, Karawang, and Bekasi.
On a broader scale, the railway network spanning from Daop 1 Jakarta to Daop 9 Jember, and from Divre 1 Medan to Divre 4 Tanjung Karang, contains a total of 3,888 level crossings. These sites represent points where rail lines and highways meet on the same plane. Conversely, there are only 564 locations nationwide where traffic is separated by flyovers or underpasses.
Out of the total 3,888 level crossings identified across the national network, 2,112 are currently guarded, leaving 1,776 points unmanned and potentially vulnerable to accidents.
Bobby Rasyidin, the President Director of PT KAI, emphasized that the company is working closely with the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) to enforce strict regulations regarding these crossings. This includes a decisive policy to close any crossings that fail to meet essential safety requirements.
Speaking at a press conference at Bekasi Timur Station on Wednesday (April 29), Rasyidin highlighted that even those managed by community organizations are subject to these standards. “As I mentioned earlier, as long as a crossing does not meet the necessary requirements to guarantee safety, we must close it,” he stated firmly.
Summary
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) reports that 130 out of 423 level crossings in the Daop 1 Jakarta area are currently unmanned. To enhance safety, authorities have implemented 118 non-level crossings, such as flyovers and underpasses, to separate rail and road traffic. The Daop 1 operational area covers Jakarta, Banten, and several major cities in West Java.
Nationwide, 1,776 of the 3,888 level crossings remain without active supervision, leading to increased safety risks. KAI is collaborating with the Ministry of Transportation to enforce strict regulations and close any crossings that fail to meet safety requirements. This initiative aims to reduce accidents by ensuring all intersections meet necessary safety standards.
