JK Pays Respects to Ryamizard, Recalls Aceh Tsunami Relief Efforts

Jusuf Kalla (JK), who served as Indonesia’s 10th and 12th Vice President, paid his respects at the Cikeas residence of the late General Ryamizard Ryacudu, the former Minister of Defense, in Bogor on Sunday, May 31. Kalla fondly remembered Ryamizard as a distinguished TNI soldier known for his extraordinary dedication to the nation.

“First and foremost, Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un (Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return). We have come here to offer our condolences for the passing of the late General Ryamizard Ryacudu. He was an exceptional high-ranking officer, renowned for his remarkable achievements and impactful career,” Kalla told reporters, underscoring the profound respect he held for the deceased general.

Kalla further highlighted General Ryamizard’s deep-rooted military heritage, noting that his family had dedicated generations to serving the nation through military service. This legacy, according to Kalla, strongly underscored Ryamizard’s pivotal role in shaping Indonesia’s defense landscape.

“He came from a family of generals; his father was a general, his father-in-law was a general, and his child is also a general. This illustrious lineage truly exemplifies his significant contributions to the nation’s security and defense, and we deeply honor his immense services,” Kalla affirmed, emphasizing the Ryacudu family’s enduring commitment to the country.

Reflecting on their shared time in government, Kalla acknowledged a robust working relationship with Ryamizard, particularly during his tenure as Vice President. Among his most vivid recollections were Ryamizard’s critical involvement in various efforts to resolve the complex Aceh conflict and his instrumental role in the humanitarian response following the devastating Aceh tsunami relief operations.

“When I first served, he was the Army Chief of Staff, and we maintained a very good working relationship. He provided extensive assistance during the resolution of the Aceh conflict, during the tsunami, and in many other initiatives aimed at achieving peace in Aceh. Subsequently, he also served as the Minister of Defense at that time,” Kalla elaborated, detailing their long-standing professional association.

While Kalla chose not to delve into specific personal anecdotes, he affirmed that their bond remained strong and collaborative throughout their concurrent service in the Indonesian government.

“Indeed, there were many aspects to our relationship, but personally, it was primarily a professional connection between colleagues serving together in government,” he added, indicating the collaborative spirit that defined their interactions.

Later that evening, Airlangga Hartarto, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, also visited General Ryamizard’s home to express his condolences. Hartarto remembered Ryamizard as a leader deeply committed to strengthening the national spirit, notably through his unwavering advocacy for the “Bela Negara” (state defense) program.

Hartarto and Ryamizard had previously served together in the cabinet during the 2014-2019 period, fostering a shared experience in national governance.

“He was a fellow cabinet member from 2014 to 2019. What I always remember about him is his strong push for civilian involvement in state defense. This was indeed one of his most prominent policies during that era,” Airlangga highlighted, recognizing Ryamizard’s innovative approach to national preparedness.

According to Hartarto, General Ryamizard was a quintessential nationalist figure, characterized by his profound commitment to the nation and its people.

“General Ryamizard Ryacudu was a true military nationalist. We all feel an immense sense of loss. He was, without a doubt, a good man,” Hartarto concluded, honoring the late General’s legacy as a staunch patriot and respected individual.
