Marc Marquez Sets French MotoGP Lap Record Despite Missing Out on Pole

LE MANS – Francesco ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia has secured a dominant pole position for the MotoGP French Grand Prix 2026 at Le Mans, setting the fastest time during Saturday’s intense qualifying session on May 9th. This impressive feat marks Bagnaia’s first pole since the MotoGP Malaysia 2025 event last October, signaling a powerful return to his top qualifying form.

Joining him on the coveted front row will be the formidable Marc Marquez in second, with championship contender Marco Bezzecchi completing the top three grid positions. Marquez, who fought his way through Qualifying 1 (Q1) to reach the main Qualifying 2 (Q2) session, became a major talking point earlier in the day. He shattered the lap record in Q1, clocking an astonishing 1 minute 29.288 seconds. This blistering pace eclipsed the previous benchmark of 1 minute 29.324 seconds, set by Fabio Quartararo in 2025, showcasing the eight-time world champion’s raw speed and adaptability.

Reflecting on his performance, Marc Marquez told MotoGP reporters after qualifying, “I was fast in Q1, and I intended to replicate that pace in Q2, but it proved difficult. Still, starting from second position is already a very good result for us.” Meanwhile, championship leader Marco Bezzecchi expressed satisfaction with his qualifying outcome, securing a crucial front-row start. Bezzecchi stated, “My target for qualifying was to improve upon yesterday’s practice sessions, and we achieved that. I knew this would be a challenging weekend, so this result is both good and pleasing.”

Despite clinching pole position, Pecco Bagnaia, who rides with the number 63, appeared remarkably calm, almost as if he hadn’t fully processed the impressive result. He simply commented, “I just need to be consistent. Everyone knows that. What’s clear is, this is good.”
