Yogyakarta Mayor Hasto Wardoyo recently convened a crucial meeting at his official residence on Sunday, April 26th, with parents whose children were victims of alleged violence and neglect at the Little Aresha Yogya daycare. The distressing gathering underscored the severe impact of these incidents on the young children involved.
During the meeting, it became evident that several children are exhibiting strong tendencies toward psychological disturbances, directly attributable to the traumatic experiences they endured at the daycare facility. This alarming finding highlights the urgent need for specialized intervention and support.
“Essentially, the parents’ primary request was for protection and assistance for their children,” Mayor Hasto stated. He further elaborated on the gravity of the situation, noting, “because some of these children are currently showing distinct signs of psychological unhealthiness.” This direct appeal from the affected families has galvanized the local administration into action.
Responding to this pressing need, Mayor Hasto has engaged in discussions with the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) and other pertinent agencies. Their collaborative goal is to establish a dedicated support team, designed to provide comprehensive care for the young victims. This initiative reflects a proactive approach to addressing the complex trauma faced by the children.
Elaborating on the expertise required for this vital team, Hasto emphasized, “This will, of course, necessitate child psychologists, child development specialists, nutritionists to ensure proper intake for the children, and parenting experts. These are the professionals we are preparing to bring on board.” The multidisciplinary approach aims to address every facet of the children’s recovery journey.
Beyond the children’s immediate needs, the pervasive stress experienced by many parents was also a significant point of concern during the meeting. Mayor Hasto observed firsthand the profound emotional toll, mentioning that several parents were visibly in tears, grappling with the trauma inflicted upon their families.
Acknowledging the emotional burden on the guardians, Hasto confirmed that support extends to them as well. “Therefore, we are also working collaboratively; we have 18 clinical psychologists available at our community health centers, known as Puskesmas, whom we are also preparing to assist the parents,” he announced. This commitment ensures that both children and their families receive the necessary psychological care to navigate this challenging period.
