According to reports by Chosun and confirmed by Ajiado Animation Works Inc., Shibayama, who also served as the studio’s former president and CEO, passed away on March 6th at the age of 84. His death was attributed to lung cancer.
In a statement released by Ajiado Animation Works Inc., the studio expressed their grief, highlighting Shibayama’s enduring contribution: “Animation director Tsutomu Shibayama, who was responsible for the Doraemon film series for more than 20 years, died of lung cancer on the 6th.” This statement underscores his long-standing dedication to the beloved robot cat franchise.

In the wake of this profound loss, details regarding Shibayama’s final rites were kept private. The studio confirmed that the funeral was a private affair, with plans for a separate, public memorial event to be announced at a later date, allowing fans and colleagues to pay their respects.
