Puan Maharani, Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), extended profound condolences following the passing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
This somber message was delivered by Puan during the 15th plenary session, marking the opening of the fourth sitting period for the 2025–2026 session, held at the DPR RI Building in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, March 10.
In her address, Puan highlighted the escalating conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. She stated that these military assaults had tragically claimed thousands of lives, including that of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“On behalf of the leadership and Members of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, we extend our deepest condolences for the demise of His Excellency Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who perished in a military attack by Israel and the United States on Iranian territory on February 28, 2026,” Puan stated.
Conflict Deemed a Global Challenge
Puan emphasized that the protracted conflict between the US-Israel alliance and Iran transcends mere regional differences. She posited it as a significant and evolving challenge to future global governance and stability.
She underscored the critical importance of strengthening international law, reinforcing the indispensable role of international institutions in safeguarding global peace, upholding justice, ensuring world stability, and affirming every nation’s inherent right to defend its sovereignty.
The Chairperson of the PDIP Central Executive Board also conveyed sincere sympathy to the Iranian populace grappling with the profound difficulties of this trying situation.
She reiterated Indonesia’s steadfast commitment to the principles of independence, enduring peace, and social justice, which intrinsically drives its deep concern for such complex global circumstances.
Puan affirmed that the DPR RI unequivocally supports all diplomatic initiatives—whether conducted bilaterally, regionally, or multilaterally—aimed at encouraging all involved parties to exercise utmost restraint, avert any broader escalation of the conflict, prioritize unwavering respect for state sovereignty, and ultimately achieve peaceful resolution of disputes.
DPR Calls for UN Action
Furthermore, Puan urged the United Nations to swiftly and decisively intervene to ensure the rigorous upholding of international law and to provide robust protection for civilian populations caught in the crossfire.
The DPR RI also reiterated that the Government of the Republic of Indonesia must consistently uphold its constitutionally mandated free and active foreign policy. This policy, she noted, is crucial for judiciously, steadfastly, and constructively safeguarding national interests amidst the constantly evolving global geopolitical dynamics.
