Indonesia’s President, Prabowo Subianto, recently underscored the United States as one of Indonesia’s most steadfast partners. He highlighted the significant historical bond between the two nations, acknowledging America’s enduring contributions that have profoundly shaped Indonesia’s journey.
During his address to American business leaders at a Business Summit held at the US Chamber of Commerce in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, February 18, Prabowo reiterated that U.S. support for Indonesia has been unwavering since its struggle for independence. He emphasized the consistent backing Indonesia received during crucial periods in its history.
“The United States is one of our strongest partners. We have never forgotten that the United States supported our struggle for independence. Many times, the United States intervened to help Indonesia in critical times,” Prabowo stated, underscoring the depth of their long-standing alliance and historical solidarity.
Prabowo further urged the younger generation of Indonesians to always remember the pivotal role the U.S. played in the nation’s formative years. He specifically referenced America’s vital contributions, both politically and economically, during the tumultuous 1960s.
“I also convey this to the young generation of Indonesia so that they do not forget the role played by the United States in the birth of our nation, both politically and economically. During the critical 60s, when our agriculture collapsed due to turmoil in Southeast Asia, the United States helped us through the PL 480 program. That was very significant,” he recounted, highlighting a specific instance of crucial aid.
The PL 480 program, officially known as the Agricultural Trade Development and Assistance Act, is a landmark U.S. food aid initiative launched by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954. This humanitarian program continues to operate today through USAID, delivering vital assistance and benefiting an estimated 4 billion people across 150 countries worldwide.
Looking ahead, President Prabowo expressed his strong desire for a more robust American presence in Indonesia’s economy. He affirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to working diligently for the welfare of the Indonesian people, which includes prioritizing transparent and clean governance.
“Therefore, we hope for a stronger American presence in our economy. I want to assure you that we are working very hard for the interests of our people. The Indonesian people demand good governance, they demand a clean government. This is my position: a clean government that will create, promote, and uphold justice and the rule of law,” he concluded, stressing his dedication to accountability and legal integrity.
