The Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung, has issued a strong prohibition against “sweeping” or unauthorized raids targeting restaurants that choose to operate during the holy month of Ramadan. This directive aims to ensure a peaceful and inclusive environment across the capital.
“Naturally, as Governor, I bear the responsibility for this, and I absolutely will not permit any sweeping activities,” Pramono affirmed. His statement was made on Saturday, February 14, at the KPGM Church in Central Jakarta, where he underscored the crucial importance of observing Ramadan in an atmosphere of tranquility and mutual respect.
Pramono emphasized that the spiritual period of Ramadan should be embraced with profound harmony and understanding. “Therefore, I want to assert that welcoming Ramadan must be filled with peace and mutual respect,” he stated, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to fostering interfaith cohesion within Jakarta’s diverse community.
The Governor further highlighted the unique confluence of this year’s Ramadan with the celebration of Chinese New Year (Imlek). This close proximity, he noted, necessitates even greater vigilance and enhanced preparations to maintain a serene and respectful atmosphere for all citizens throughout the festive periods.
Elaborating on the sequential cultural calendar, Pramono explained, “Currently, we are in the period of welcoming Imlek, from the 13th to the 17th. Subsequently, from the 18th onwards, Jakarta’s ‘face’ will entirely transform to embrace Ramadan and, thereafter, anticipate Eid al-Fitr.” He concluded by reiterating the thoroughness of these preparations, acknowledging, “We are preparing for this meticulously, because as the Governor of Jakarta, I am well aware that the majority of Jakarta’s population adheres to the Islamic faith.”
