Elly Idris, an iconic figure in Indonesian football history, reportedly breathed his last at the age of 62. He passed away at Cinta Kasih Hospital in Ciputat on Thursday, February 12th, at 3:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

The news of Elly Idris’s passing was officially confirmed by Persita Tangerang. The late legend was an integral part of the ‘Pendekar Cisadane’ for many years, leaving an indelible mark on the club both as a formidable player and a dedicated coach.

“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. Elly Idris, a figure who once defended and managed the Pendekar Cisadane as both a player and coach, has returned to Allah’s mercy,” Persita posted on its official Instagram account on Thursday, February 12th.

Born on November 4, 1962, on Buru Island in Maluku Province, Elly Idris developed a passion for football from a young age. His professional career began in the early 1980s, setting the stage for a remarkable journey in the sport.

Elly Idris ventured to Jakarta to join the junior team of PS Jayakarta, an elite club in Galatama, Indonesia’s semi-professional competition at the time. His talent quickly shone through, earning him a spot in the main squad, where he experienced a memorable competition final against Niac Mitra in Surabaya.

Though they didn’t clinch the championship, Elly Idris’s reputation soared. His exceptional performance led to him being called up by coach Danurwindo for the Liga Selection against Niac Mitra, further cementing his growing prominence and unique profile in Indonesian football.

Elly Idris continued his illustrious career by joining Yanita Utama, a club renowned for its financial prowess. It was here that he secured his first major titles, triumphing in the prestigious Galatama competition during the 1983–1984 and 1984 seasons.

Yanita Utama disbanded shortly thereafter, but Elly Idris’s talent ensured he wasn’t without a club for long. Highly sought after by numerous teams, he swiftly joined Kramayudha Tiga Berlian (KTB), another Galatama powerhouse, where he continued his winning streak, securing championships in 1985, 1986, and 1987.

Following his success with KTB, Elly Idris continued his dominant run with Pelita Jaya. With the club owned by Nirwan Bakrie, Elly added more Galatama titles to his impressive resume, winning in 1988, 1989, and 1990, showcasing his consistent ability to perform at the highest level.

Elly Idris’s career then led him to Persita Tangerang, where his legend truly blossomed. For six impactful years, he passionately defended the ‘Pendekar Cisadane’ until his retirement at the age of 34 in 1996, becoming an enduring icon for the club.

Elly Idris’s brilliance wasn’t confined to club football alone. His immense talent and potential were recognized by the Indonesian National Team, earning him a coveted spot in the ‘Skuad Garuda’ from 1985 to 1993, representing his nation with pride.

He was a vital part of the Indonesian National Team that achieved a remarkable feat by reaching the semifinals of the 1986 Asian Games. His final appearance for the ‘Garuda’ squad was during the 1993 SEA Games, concluding a distinguished international career.

Elly later returned to his beloved Persita Tangerang for the 2007/2008 season, serving as an assistant coach. His dedication and expertise earned him a promotion just two seasons later, where he took on the crucial role of head coach, guiding the team with his experience.

After parting ways with Persita in 2013, Elly Idris had a period away from coaching. However, his passion for the game brought him back for the 2017/2018 season. His last coaching stint was with Persitara Jakarta Utara during the 2021/2022 season, continuing to impart his knowledge to new generations.
