Prominent public figure Roy Suryo recently attended the Polda Metro Jaya in South Jakarta to fulfill his mandatory reporting obligation concerning the contentious allegations surrounding the alleged fake diploma of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). His appearance on Wednesday, February 11th, underscored the ongoing legal and public scrutiny of the high-profile case.
Roy Suryo’s visit coincided with the examination of several expert witnesses presented by his legal team. Among these key figures was Bonatua Silalahi, a respected public policy observer whose testimony was central to the day’s proceedings. The expert examinations were directly linked to the extensive research conducted by Roy Suryo himself, alongside his colleagues Rismon Sianipar and Tifa Yusiyati, into President Jokowi’s diploma that had previously circulated widely across social media platforms.
During his testimony, Bonatua Silalahi revealed critical findings regarding the documents utilized for Roy Suryo’s research. He stated that the primary sample originated from an upload by an individual named Dian Sandi. Crucially, Bonatua confirmed that this uploaded document was, in terms of its informational content, identical to a legalized copy he personally received directly from the General Election Commission (KPU).

“From the diploma number, the logo, the signature, the photo – everything is identical. There are no informational discrepancies whatsoever,” Bonatua affirmed following his examination, emphasizing the remarkable consistency between the two documents on a substantive level.
He further elaborated that the sole notable differences lay in the physical presentation of the documents. The copy obtained from the KPU was a legalized black and white photocopy. In stark contrast, the document uploaded by Dian Sandi was in color and had undergone cropping, resulting in a disproportionate appearance. “The one uploaded by Dian Sandi is colored, but what Mr. Bona Silalahi received from the KPU is a legalized black and white photocopy,” he explained.
Bonatua detailed the physical alterations, noting, “The sample from Mr. Dian Sandi was already cropped. It had been reduced from A3 to A4 size, rendering it disproportionate because it was photographed from a different angle.” Despite these physical variations, Bonatua maintained that the identical informational content rendered the sample used by Roy Suryo’s team academically valid for research purposes.
“As soon as the information uploaded aligns with what is held by the KPU, then academically, the research sample can be considered valid. As for the ultimate conclusion, that rests entirely on the researcher’s methodology,” he clarified, differentiating between the academic validity of the sample and the interpretation of research findings.
Meanwhile, Roy Suryo asserted that Bonatua’s testimony unequivocally strengthened his team’s claim regarding the legitimacy of their research. He highlighted that their investigation was founded on samples that were informationally identical to official data held by the KPU, thus validating their methodology.

“What we investigated from Dian Sandi’s upload is precisely the same as what was eventually issued by the KPU. This confirms that our research is sound concerning the chosen sample,” Roy stated confidently. Nevertheless, he firmly reiterated his team’s unwavering conclusion that the diploma circulating on social media remains 99.9 percent fake.
Roy also took the opportunity to clarify a crucial point: he and his team have never accused President Jokowi himself of forging the diploma. Instead, their research has consistently focused on the authenticity of the document disseminated on social media, rather than the original document possessed by the President. In light of these developments, Roy Suryo once again pressed for legal action to be directed towards the individual who initially uploaded the controversial colored document, specifically naming Dian Sandi.
“Dian Sandi’s posting was the causa prima, or the foundational starting point, of our entire research,” Roy explained, underscoring the critical role of that specific upload. He elaborated that this initial upload provided the essential basis for his team’s comprehensive digital analysis, which included detailed examinations of histogram and luminance gradients to assess the document’s integrity.
